Children have been recognized as supreme assets of a Nation. However a majority of children in India continue to live without being cared , not protected to have a meaningful childhood. Under these circumstances the children become homeless, vagabonds and prone to commit petty crimes. The juvenile justice system as conceived by legislation aims at providing care, protection, treatment, development, and rehabilitation of delinquent and neglected juvenile. India has witnessed an increase both in crimes committed by children and those committed against them. There had been 97.9 per cent increase in crimes committed by children with more children being arraigned for arson, theft and cheating. Over 33,000 juveniles, mostly between the age group of 16 to 18, were arrested for crimes like rape and murder across Indian states in 2011, the highest in last decade.
OBJECTIVE:- Objective of the seminar is an attempt to identify and reflect upon the complex set of challenges facing our country for Juvenile Justice System and hopes to have inputs from academicians, voluntary agencies, the government officials, policy makers and women themselves.
